School History and Facts

 History and facts

Sadly little of the school now remains and what does is barely recognisable, most of it is being used by the Hampshire county council as offices. I visited the site on the 25th of October 2005 and took a few photos, which hopefully some may recognise.

Both Jack Dee (the comedian) and Colin Firth (the actor) attended this school. Both apparently did not enjoy their time at the school!!

Romsey road school was transferred to the current site in 1952.

When Mr D.Beacham was appointed as the new Headmaster he felt it lacked identity and after approaching Monty himself, who had Hampshire connections, Monty gave his badge and his flag for exclusive use of the school and it became Montgomery of Alamein School in 1968 on the anniversary of the Battle of the Somne.

Mr Beacham along with Mr Starkie and many other teachers totally transformed the schools reputation and reformed the discipline record and Montgomery of Alamein boys school gained a reputation of a very good standard.

The schools demise came about on 1st September 1984, when as a result of the amalgamation of Danemark School and Montgomery School, it became Kings School...Both Starkie and Beacham retired that year and the school slipped from Winchester's memory.

The doors have closed on Montgomery of Alamein school more than 20 years ago but lives on very well in our memories.............

Picture below (1967/8): Bernard Law Montgomery arrives for the official opening ceremony and takes a tour with Dennis Beacham.

The Art block is on the right (still there today) in the background is where the old library was, now gone. The building to the left was the Science block, sadly it too is now gone. John Lennox has informed me that the school was orignally intended to be called just 'Montgomery boys school' but Montgomery insisted in adding the 'of Alamien' part.
